Pneuma is a piece for small chamber symphony with a prominent flute part. It explores timbral resources of the flute in relation to the ensemble, as well as harmonic and motivic resources inherent in a central, expanding melodic idea. This idea, a rising line paired with its falling inversion, forms the basis for the entire composition, being presented in a variety of modalities. Formally, the work is divided into four parts: "Exposition," with introduction, central theme, and transition; a loud, fast "Bells section," also with transition; a "Dance" with conflicting themes in harp and ensemble; and a "Recapitulation," featuring a metric expansion and re-ordering of themes.
