The mission of the Department of Geriatrics is to lead the nation in preparing physicians, in all medical disciplines, to provide exemplary care to older adults. FSUCOM is the first medical school in history to begin with a legislative mandate to teach geriatrics in all four years of medical school training. Geriatrics is both integrated throughout the curriculum, and also specifically addressed through required experiences and rotations.
Our scholarly activities have been primarily in the area of educational design and innovation. We have also conducted research on the effects of the Hospital Elder Life Program, rural geriatric health care, collaborated with the Department of Food, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences to study the effects of Vitamin E in bone loss, music therapy in dementia treatment, and methods to improve care of ethnically diverse populations. Many of our faculty are known nationally as experts in geriatric education and are often invited to give presentations and serve on national advisory boards.
