The purpose of this study is to survey the piano music of Claude Debussy as viewed bymusicologist and philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch (1903-1986). The Debussy performer is faced with a tripartite challenge: how does one make sense of works that require musical artistry, sensitivity to visual or imaginative inspirations, as well as philosophical depth? This treatise intends to address and contemplate this question through Jankélévitch’s books Music and the ineffable and Debussy et le mystère de l’instant. Debussy’s second book of Préludes (1913) is presented as a window to the broader aesthetic context of his oeuvre.
A Treatise submitted to the College of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Music.
