Mrofchak, C. J. (C. J. ). (2021). Style, Structure, and Performance in Three Portraits for Solo Guitar (2004–2020) by
Sérgio Assad. Retrieved from https://purl.lib.fsu.edu/diginole/2020_Summer_Fall_Mrofchak_fsu_0071E_16412
This treatise serves two primary goals. The first is to showcase three of Sérgio Assad’s Portraits for solo guitar, Eli’s Portrait, Sandy’s Portrait, and David’s Portrait. Each chapter on these works will provide biographical information on each Portrait’s dedicatee before analyzing the compositions and discussing performance considerations. Guitarists studying these works will learn about important figures in the guitar community including pedagogues, performers, and donors. Second, this treatise provides an extension to the previous research on Assad, specifically, Dr. João Paulo Figueirôa da Cruz’s treatise, An Annotated Bibliography of Works by the Brazilian Composer Sérgio Assad. Appendix A of this treatise, Assad’s Solo Works 2008–2020, is an annotated bibliography picking up where Figueirôa’s bibliography ends. This treatise provides a valuable reference to those studying the music of Sérgio Assad.
A Treatise submitted to the College of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Music.
