Sophia Rahming

"Say it in 6: ""Commitment to creating equitable STEM environments."" Sophia is pursuing a PhD in Higher Education, with an emphasis on Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, at Florida State. She chose FSU because the Seminole nation has a historical link to her country, The Bahamas, and she believes that representation in any and every field matters. She aspires to use her research to change the culture of STEM to include race, gender, sexuality, religion, class, ethnicity, and creed. Sophia aspires to create a just and caring environment in STEM, especially for women of color, with a focus on international women of color, so that people of color are more than commodities in the field. In the future, she hopes to pursue a tenure-track faculty position or a postdoctoral fellowship. In 2018-2019, Sophia became an NYU Steinhardt Faculty First-Look Scholar and was awarded the FSU Graduate School Fellows Society Dissertation Fellowship, and W. Hugh Stickler Award for the Enhancement of Dissertation Research. In 2018, she was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, became a FSU College of Education Hardee Fellow, and was one of 60 Ph.D. students from around the world chosen to participate in the Humboldt University."
