LIFE AS LYRIC DRAMA IN THE FICTION OF MARY WEBB (ENGLAND)
LIFE AS LYRIC DRAMA IN THE FICTION OF MARY WEBB (ENGLAND)
This study establishes that the lyricism of Mary Webb's early prose and poems has been enhanced in Precious Bane and her other five novels. In the study music is used as an analog to establish connections between the aural effect of Webb's narratives and structural techniques that are seen to be musical., Webb achieves the effects of music in narrative by means of onomatopoeia, silence, motival repetition and change, varied rhythm and tempo, crescendo to climax, and large formal elements generally understood to create coherence. There are literary changes in tone analogous to harmonic shifts, resolved dissonances, rhythmic variation--devices habitually employed by the composer., In the absence of a statement of specific intent to create a "musical" work, Webb's novels nevertheless manifest this quality because she expresses an imagistic vision of reality. All her novels are complex, poetic and dense with allusive meaning. Hence they point beyond themselves as does music in its capacity to be endlessly evocative. Webb's prose is improvisatory in its immediacy yet structurally unified on several levels. By means of near and far vision she incorporates both the displaced image (a Webb hallmark), and the suggestion of general three part form whose musical analogy is the double concerto for soloists and orchestra. Webb's consistent use of pairs of characters over a stable English rural background makes possible interplay in plot and characterization that suggests solo and orchestral dialogue. Between the poles of poetic detail and implicit large musical structure is a continual oscillation or transformation; this displacement followed by a new order is the essence of music and narration, tending toward unity and coherence., The critical approach used in this study is seen to have wider application beyond what is implied in the choice of one author. The capacity of lyric prose to transcend its medium and suggest the condition of another art form is evident in Webb's narratives as referential meaning gives way to an aural, aesthetic state. Her use of language calls attention to itself, and in this Webb is an artist., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-12, Section: A, page: 3902., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.

LIFE SATISFACTION, WORK SATISFACTION AND LEISURE SATISFACTION AMONG STATE/FEDERAL REHABILITATION COUNSELORS
LIFE SATISFACTION, WORK SATISFACTION AND LEISURE SATISFACTION AMONG STATE/FEDERAL REHABILITATION COUNSELORS
This study investigated the relationship of life, work, and leisure satisfaction of rehabilitation counselors employed in state/federal vocational rehabilitation agencies in the Rehabilitation Services Administrations (RSA) Region IV and determined which of the variables of age, sex, education, marital status, salary, tenure, number of successful closures a year, and client classification, accounted for the variances in those satisfactions., A cover letter and a set of questionnaires (Satisfaction Questionnaire) were mailed to 658 rehabilitation counselors. Follow-up correspondence was mailed to the entire sample after a two-week interval., A total of 336 rehabilitation counselors responded to the questionnaire. The majority of the respondents were male between the ages of 26 and 44 and were married. Eighty-three percent of respondents had a post baccalaureate education and were fairly evenly divided in their tenure with the state agency., In the area of work, life and leisure satisfaction the counselors scored most consistently in life satisfaction with greater dispersion for work and leisure satisfaction. There were high levels of leisure, life, and work satisfaction., Life and work satisfaction correlated at a higher level than did life and leisure and there was no correlation between work and leisure satisfaction., In accounting for the variance in life satisfaction by work and leisure satisfaction, the results supported work satisfaction's contribution at a high percentage level (23%) whereas the contribution of leisure satisfaction was minimal (3%)., The variance in work, leisure and life satisfaction accounted for by the eight demographic variables was significant and led to the investigation of the interaction variables. The interaction variable of sex by marital status was found to be significant only for leisure satisfaction. The results of the data analyses supported the rejection of all five hypotheses investigated by this study., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 42-03, Section: A, page: 1018., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1981.
LIFE SPAN CHANGES IN AN ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL MOVEMENT ORGANIZATION: THE CASE OF ANTI-NUCLEAR ALLIANCE
LIFE SPAN CHANGES IN AN ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL MOVEMENT ORGANIZATION: THE CASE OF ANTI-NUCLEAR ALLIANCE
An exploratory case study of one organization--Anti-Nuclear Alliance (ANA)--was carried out during the 3 1/2 year life span of the organization. The study was designed to identify and analyze the organizational concepts related to life span stages of development. The organization was conceptualized as having passed through three identifiable stages during its life span: Growth, Institutionalization, and Decline. The three organizational concepts found to be related to these life span stages were: (a) composition of the group of participants in regard to adherence to the alternative paradigm and levels of involvement with the organization, (b) the linkages formed by participants of ANA with other organizations, and (c) the form of decision-making adopted by the group during its business meetings., Data were collected through participant observation of ANA's business meetings and through the study of meeting minutes kept by the organization. A data analysis process based on "grounded theory" as developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967) and Glaser (1978) was utilized to arrive at a conceptual scheme delineating the variations and interactions of the organizational concepts within each life span stage., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-10, Section: A, page: 3418., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.

LIFE STYLE ASPIRATIONS, MULTIPLE ROLE COMMITMENTS, AND ROLE CONFLICT STRATEGIES OF WOMEN DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMS OF HIGHER EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION WITHIN THE STATE OF FLORIDA
The purpose of this study was to identify the life style aspirations, multiple role commitments, and role conflict strategies of women doctoral students in comprehensive programs of higher education administration within the State of Florida. During the Spring 1982 semester, there were 91 women doctoral students enrolled in such programs at The Florida State University and The University of Florida. A survey instrument was designed by the investigator, pretested, and mailed to the entire population. Responses were received from 81 women or 89 percent of the population., Marriage and family aspirations were revealed by most of the respondents and the majority either had or expected to have at least one child. The majority of women who had no children but expected children in the future also indicated that they would return to work as soon as possible after the birth/adoption of each child. In addition, over 79 percent of the respondents did not expect their careers to be interrupted before their retirement., With respect to the highest position respondents expected to obtain in their lifetime, the majority aspired towards executive/administrative level positions within postsecondary institutions. Over half of these women expected to become chief executive officers, vice presidents, directors, deans, or chairmen. In addition, the majority of the respondents indicated that they would consider employment in fields unrelated to higher education., Marriage and family were viewed as either being advantageous to or having no effect on career advancement because of support provided by a husband and family. Women who wished to remain single viewed their flexibility as an advantage., Most respondents indicated a future commitment to the roles of wife, mother, and employee, with the employee role being the most frequently mentioned response. The wife role, however, was considered the most important role, when roles occurred simultaneously., Respondents were divided equally between those who did and did not anticipate future role conflicts, with time constraints being viewed as the primary problem. The majority of women reported structural role redefinition as their most likely strategy for conflict resolution and reactive role behavior as their least likely choice. Finally, respondents recommended that universities develop day care programs and flexible work hours to alleviate the role constraints placed upon women professionals in higher education., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-07, Section: A, page: 2249., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.

LINEAR BAROCLINIC INSTABILITY IN THE PRESENCE OF LARGE-SCALE TOPOGRAPHY
LINEAR BAROCLINIC INSTABILITY IN THE PRESENCE OF LARGE-SCALE TOPOGRAPHY
The effect of a planetary-scale, wavenumber 2 topography on baroclinically active disturbances is investigated for a channel domain in a two-layer, quasi-geostrophic context. When the lower-layer zonal velocity is nonzero, the topography influences the disturbances by forcing a stationary wave, and the topography and the forced wave influence the growth rates and spatial structures of the time-dependent solutions. The case of zero zonal velocity in the lower layer was also investigated, for which no forced wave exists. Asymptotic forms of the equations, valid when the topographic effect (governed by the ratio of the nondimensional topographic height to the rotational Froude number) is small, are used to obtain both the stationary and time-dependent solutions. The time-dependent solutions are also obtained using a numerical approach, in which is determined the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a matrix representing the dynamical equations. Agreement is good between these two approaches., Recent laboratory experiments by Li, Kung, and Pfeffer, with a baroclinic annulus in which there is a false bottom with wavenumber 2 topography, are used to select governing parameters. The simultaneous presence of a stationary forced wave of wavenumber 2 and a time-dependent baroclinic wave of wavenumber 4, which has wavenumber 2 and 6 sidebands due to the topography, yields a flow field that exhibits some principal features of the laboratory experiments. The position of the forced wave and the location of an excursion in latitude of the storm track show qualitative resemblance to those features observed in the atmosphere., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 47-12, Section: B, page: 4923., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1986.

LINKAGE PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES USED BY A COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATIONAL AGENCY: CASE STUDIES OF SIX PUBLIC LIBRARIES
LINKAGE PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES USED BY A COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATIONAL AGENCY: CASE STUDIES OF SIX PUBLIC LIBRARIES
This study, using the case study and cross-case analysis method, identified and analyzed the practices and procedures a community-based educational agency, the public library, used to link with its external environment, its community. The bond issue referendum was selected as the phenomena through which effective linkage practices could be observed. The following research objectives guided the course of the study: (1) to determine the practices and procedures public libraries used to establish and maintain linkages with their external environment; (2) to compare the linkage practices used by libraries that have been successful in passing a bond referendum proposition the first time the issue is presented with linkage practices used by libraries that have been unsuccessful; and (3) to identify and analyze the environmental and organizational factors that affect the linkage practices and procedures used., Data were gathered through on-site personal interviews, community and library documents, local newspaper clippings, and personal observation. A major conclusion was that one particular environmental factor, the status of the community economy, can have an overriding influence on the success or failure of the most comprehensive referenda campaigns. Other conclusions include that there are commonalities of linkage practices used in both successful and unsuccessful referenda campaigns, differing only in extensiveness; that the kinds of linkage practices can be more important than the number of practices used; and that there appears to be a difference in the types of target populations contacted in successful referenda campaigns., Recommendations for identifying and implementing linkage development during a referendum campaign were detailed. Recommendations for further research were also suggested., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 48-12, Section: A, page: 3002., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1987.

LINKED CLUSTER SERIES EXPANSION TECHNIQUE FOR QUANTUM SPIN SYSTEMS
LINKED CLUSTER SERIES EXPANSION TECHNIQUE FOR QUANTUM SPIN SYSTEMS
The linked-cluster series expansion is developed fur use on models of quantum spin systems with single-ion potentials. The linked-cluster series is defined as a statistical mechanical perturbation series in which the mean-field Hamiltonian and the single-ion potential are treated exactly with the perturbation representing the effects of fluctuation correlations. All terms of the free energy up to a given finite order are calculated, and estimates of thermodynamic functions are made based on extrapolation methods including the ratio method and Pade approximants., The T-integrals which the theory requires to be calculated are done with the use of a Wick theorem. Software for doing this algebraic integration procedure by computer is described., As an example of the technique a sixth order free energy series for the anisotropic Heisenberg exchange model with D(S('z)(,i))('2) single-ion potential has been calculated. Equilibrium properties over the entire temperature range for a fcc lattice are estimated including magnetization versus temperature and susceptibility versus temperature curves. Phase diagrams for selected values of exchange anisotropy are produced. Magnetization and susceptibility exponents are estimated. Tricritical points in the D-T plane are obtained for selected values of exchange anisotropy. The value of exchange anisotropy for hard-axis values of D above which bicritical behavior is seen is estimated., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 47-06, Section: B, page: 2499., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1986.

LIQUID: A SOURCE OF MEANING AND STRUCTURE IN CLAUDE SIMON'S "LA BATAILLE DE PHARSALE" (FRANCE)
LIQUID: A SOURCE OF MEANING AND STRUCTURE IN CLAUDE SIMON'S "LA BATAILLE DE PHARSALE" (FRANCE)
Many critics have noted the crucial role of internal generators in Claude Simon's La Bataille de Pharsale. This study demonstrates that a body of liquid-related textual elements comprises a subsystem into which a significant number of associations and associative patterns may be integrated. Comprehension of this subsystem results in a new understanding of the novel's underlying structure and its treatment of various kinds of destruction., Three general areas of liquid-based destruction are identified. Within the novel's descriptions of surface deterioration, numerous references to liquids are generated. A major effect of these references is that they serve to foredoom the quests of each of the novel's two central protagonists., A second general area of liquid-based destruction derives from the novel's phonological structure. A significant number of liquid-related sounds generate meanings which are threatening to one or both of the two central protagonists., A liquid-based structural movement comprises the third general area in which this element undermines both the activities of the central protagonists and the linguistic coherence of the text. The ascension of bubbles to the surface of a liquid constitutes an emblematic structure which has a destructive impact on the quests of the central protagonists., The concluding section of this study demonstrates how the liquid-related elements reveal the underlying structure of La Bataille de Pharsale. The ever-widening levels of associative patterns visible in the novel's liquid subsystem constitute a microcosm of the structure of the entire text. The association of the two liquid-related terms of vers and version, for example, represent a restricted example of linkage within this subsystem. Yet that association may be subsequently inserted into a larger associative pattern, which is the body of liquid-related terms, and hence into the entire text., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-12, Section: A, page: 3932., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.
LISTENING COMPREHENSION: A CONSTRUCT VALIDITY INVESTIGATION
LISTENING COMPREHENSION: A CONSTRUCT VALIDITY INVESTIGATION
Educators stress the importance of listening and attempt to train students to listen more efficiently. Researchers have investigated variables which influence listening and the effectiveness of listening training. The results of their research do not demonstrate clearly that listening efficiency can be improved by instruction, or that listening is separable from other cognitive skills. Other research suggests that listening to a lecture may consist of listening for details and listening to make inferences, two behaviors which are similar to the lower levels of cognitive processing suggested by an established educational taxonomy., A review of the field of listening research suggests that listening is an ill-defined construct, with marginal validity. This study sought to find evidence of a distinguishable lecture-listening ability and to ask whether this ability contains component skills similar to the taxonomic levels of knowledge and comprehension., Sixty-one college students listened to three lectures which differed somewhat in content, length, and number of points covered but were similar in other respects. The tests asked both knowledge and comprehension level questions., It was predicted that test scores would correlate positively at a higher level ((GREATERTHEQ) .6) than cognitive measures generally correlate with each other, suggesting an underlying lecture-listening skill. It was also predicted that test items would cluster in a factor analysis by taxonomic level., The obtained correlations among the tests were only (.2 to .3) and thus failed to provide evidence of listening as cognitive skill. However, the low test reliability and the violation of two assumptions of parametric statistics dictate that interpretation of these results must be tentative. The factor analysis results (first test only) were not clearly interpretable because of the small sample size. However, these results do suggest that lecture-listening behavior may be influenced more by the specific topics within a lecture rather than the type of cognitive processing required., Recommendations for further study included replication using the video-tapes made during this study, the development of tests with greater reliability, and further investigation of the influence of the factors of length, message density and topic--heretofore unidentified as factors influencing listening behavior., This study does not provide a clear answer to whether a lecture-listening ability exists nor whether components of lecture-listening behavior are similar to cognitive taxonomic levels. The results do cast doubt on the existence of such a listening ability. These results also suggest that listening behavior may be related to topics rather than taxonomic level., Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 41-07, Section: A, page: 2827., Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1980.
