Domenico Gabrielli’s Seven Ricercari not only represent the first exploration of the technical and musical possibilities of the cello but are also assets to modern cello pedagogy. This treatise examines the pedagogical value of these pieces. Chapter 1 provides background information on their composition; it addresses the early development of the cello and the cultural context of seventeenth-century Bologna, and it offers an overview of the musical language and pedagogical significance of the Ricercari. Chapter 2 opens the discussion of the pedagogical value of the Seven Ricercari by explaining the general approach that cellists should adopt when learning them. It then highlights benefits concerning left-hand and right-hand techniques, as well as aspects of musicality that cellists can gain. By working on these pieces, cellists of different levels can refine their fundamental skills and musicianship in preparation for their studies of more advanced works in the cello literature.
A Treatise submitted to the College of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Music.
