Kendra Mitchell
"Say it in 6: "My PhD now has global significance." Kendra entered Florida State's PhD program in Rhetoric and Composition after working right across the tracks at Florida A&M University. Drawing upon her experience advocating for students as a writing center tutor-administrator, she wrote a dissertation entitled "Language in the Center: A Case Study of Multilingualism in a Historically Black University Writing Center," which reimagines the language of African American speakers and encourages a culturally response tutoring method that celebrates linguistically and culturally diverse communicative practices. Kendra was awarded a Fulbright Grant to conduct research related to her dissertation in South Africa, and has earned other awards as well. Kendra's research on multilingualism and African American rhetorical strategies resists mislabeling and seeks better practices for writing center practitioners and educators. "
